Jussie Smollett is guilty as sin, yet he was ordered released from jail on Wednesday by an Illinois appellate court. And that says it all.
The disgraced actor, sentenced to 150 days in prison for faking a hate crime against himself in 2019, was released on a $150,000 personal recognizance bond as he awaits an appeal of his conviction.
In the time since Smollett first lied and claimed that mysterious Trump-loving racists tried to lynch him in downtown Chicago in the dead of night, Smollett has served less than a week in jail. The eyewitness and video evidence against him is so great as to be insurmountable. Yet in a criminal justice system that many have decried as filled with white supremacy, privilege, and racism against black people, the rich black guy was just released from jail despite being so obviously guilty as to obviate any serious further discussion of the verdict.
This puts to the sharp test all of the Left’s claims of a racist criminal justice system. It seems no more likely than the possibility that the attack on Smollett was legitimate — which it most certainly was not.
Just like Smollett’s claim of being attacked by two white men wearing “Make America Great Again” hats was a laughably obvious lie, so too is the notion that the criminal justice system is hard on black criminals and easy on white ones. Most white people could never be let out on appeal despite being so clearly guilty.
This only underscores the fact that, typically, the main factor is the defendant’s wealth, not race.
Smollett’s release has rightly generated a lot of public anger. He threw gasoline on the fire that is race relations in the United States today with his faked hate crime. Racism was at the center of the Smollett case because people believed in the deceit of an agenda-driven, untruthful social justice warrior. This happened because society has been conditioned to believe first and verify last in incidents in which black people are victims.
Yet, more often than not, these claims are false.
The next time it is said that the criminal justice system is racist, remember the day Smollett was released despite being so obviously guilty that not even the dumbest person alive could believe otherwise. Remember how he was granted the privilege of freedom in circumstances that would prevent most people, white, black, and all other colors, from being released from jail.
Claims of white privilege in the criminal justice system are about as legit as Smollett’s MAGA attackers.
