McDonnell opts for hoops over GOP fundraiser

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell will be heading to Houston to cheer on the upstart Virginia Commonwealth University Rams in the Final Four, he said on Tuesday.

“I am thrilled to see VCU there,” he said on WTOP’s “Ask the Governor.” “I’ll be going to the games this weekend; I’m counting on VCU to go all the way.”

“Boy, they’re just doing a great job, playing hard, representing the state and the school well,” he said. “I want to be there to see history made.”

McDonnell, though, had been scheduled to appear at a Republican Party of Virginia Ronald Reagan Centennial fundraiser Saturday night along with Michael Reagan, the son of the former president.

“It’s an unfortunate scheduling predicament,” said spokesman Tucker Martin. “Two important events taking place at the same time, but 1,000 miles apart. This is an historic moment for VCU, a great Virginia public university, and the governor will be in Houston to root on the Rams. And he plans on being in Houston Monday night as well to watch VCU bring home a national championship to Richmond.”
