House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer chided CNN congressional reporter Manu Raju for asking about impeachment during a press conference about gun control.
House Democrats held a press conference Tuesday morning urging Congress to pass gun legislation in response to the two mass shootings earlier this month that left more than 30 people dead. They specifically advocated for the passing of H.R. 8, which would strengthen background check laws.
As the press conference neared its conclusion, Hoyer called on Raju, who attempted to change the conversation to impeachment.
“Another development has happened over the recess, in that a majority of your caucus now supports moving forward with an impeachment inquiry,” Raju stated, but then Hoyer cut him off.
“I’m sorry, this is not impeachment,” the Maryland congressman said.
“But, but Jerry Nadler said last week that the House is now currently in formal impeachment proceedings,” Raju countered. “Do you agree with that?”
Hoyer then said he wanted to “stay focused.”
Rep. Debbie Dingell then chimed in, “I want to tell people who really, there is grassroots support across this country, this Sunday and in every state across the country, Moms Demand Action, the Brady group, other gun … will hold a rally in every single state.”
“So those that care, those that want people to hear that they give a damn, excuse my language, get out there, show them, tell their senators it’s time to act,” she continued. “Let’s show the grassroots movements from one coast to the other coast, and in the heart of the Midwest.”
The press conference ended after Raju’s question.
