Laurie David was Al Gore’s lover, Star magazine reports

Every political breakup ends because of a juicy affair, right?

Just when we thought (at least for a second) that Al and Tipper Gore separated on a decent note, Star magazine has the “scoop.” Or at least the most plausible one compared to the Globe’s talk of a gay sex scandal and the National Enquirer’s bit on Tipper’s jealousy about a string of women, including a cheerleader.

But what type of mistress does Star say Gore engaged with that would actually make us think twice?

An environmentalist, of course.

Laurie David, the ex-wife of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star and “Seinfeld” creator Larry David, and the producer of Gore’s flick, “An Inconvenient Truth.”

“Al and Laurie went from friends to lovers,” an “insider” told Star. “It couldn’t be avoided.”

David called it quits with his wife Laurie in 2007 amid reports that she was cheating on him with her caretaker at their Martha’s Vineyard home, Star reports.

A friend of the Gores tells Yeas & Nays of the report, “There’s nothing to it. It’s crap.”

Al Gore’s camp would not comment on the record, but David has something to say.

“The rumor is completely and totally untrue. I adore Al and Tipper and consider them part of my family,” she said. “I’m in a committed relationship and couldn’t be happier.”

David has a presence in the Washington political scene for her environmental causes. She created a scene at the 2007 White House Correspondents Association Dinner when she confronted Karl Rove, urging him to take a new look at global warming. The scene got hot –so much so that Sheryl Crow had to step in so she could come after Rove herself. Rove said David was trying to insult him.
