Primary poll: Trump, Clinton set to crush competition in NY

A new poll of likely Republican and Democratic primary voters in New York found Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton both have significant home state advantages over the out-of-state competition.

The Manhattan billionaire boasted a 52-point advantage over Cruz in the Bloomberg survey. Trump won 64 percent of Empire State residents’ support while Cruz received 12 percent. Ohio Gov. John Kasich only received 1 percent of support in a March 14-16 poll that had a 5.6 percent margin of error.

Former N.Y. Sen. Hillary Clinton fared even better against her Democratic competition than Trump did with his. Clinton received 71 percent of Democrats’ support, three times more than Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 23 percent, according to another poll with a 5 percent margin of error.

The five total remaining candidates have just more than one month to round up support before the April 19 joint primaries.

If the polls are indicative of which candidates voters should expect to see on the ballots this November, Trump and Clinton are the obvious picks. But a follow-up question found if the two New Yorkers go up against each other in the general, Clinton would beat Trump 55 percent to 36 percent, respectively, among state residents.
