A New York resident handwrote more than 4,000 thank-you notes to New York Police Department officers and said she plans to write notes to all 36,000 officers on the force.
Police officers need a positive message to let them know the people of the city care about them, said New Yorker Coretta James.
“As a civilian, I see how tough a job these officers have, and I do this to let them know they have support out there,” James said, “that not everybody is against you.”

James tries to write at least 10 cards a day, she said.
“I try to write a certain amount when I go to a precinct, and the cards are pre-written. [On] the outside of the card, I put the ranks: lieutenant, sergeant, detective,” she told Fox News. “When I get there, that’s when I get the names, and I write the names on the card before I give it to an officer.”
Within the cards she writes to the officers, “Thank you for your service” and “It takes a special person to take a job where every time you put on your uniform you put your life at risk” are usually included.
James’s day job is as a nanny, and she is originally from Antigua. She wants to take her thank-you card writing campaign nationwide.

“The encouragement is so needed,” James said.
James got the idea to write notes to service members in Iraq and Afghanistan after she volunteered with the New York Fire Department, according to a report. She then decided to move to writing to her own community’s law enforcement.
