Topping it all off for the Preakness

It?s that time again, when the stakes are high and the Pimlico Race Track is the place to be. Each year, hundreds of thousands come out to celebrate Maryland?s annual Preakness Stakes. So while the men get fired up, the women focus on getting all gussied up.

It?s no secret that the key element in being fashionable at Preakness is the magnificently creative hat, which is typically adorned with a variety of colorful floral arrangements. Arrangements that often include the Maryland state flower, the black-eyed Susan, which is nearly synonymous with Preakness.

The fashionable women of Preakness trim their large hats with lace, netting, brocade fabrics and whimsical scenery. Hats are more than an accessory; they are full presentations that allow each woman to express individual creativity. The hat is such an integral part of the overall ensemble that customarily the hat is purchased before the outfit.

Once the hat is selected and the outfit is organized, there are a few guidelines to ensure each hat is properly presented. The hat should be placed down on the head, with just one finger width over the eyebrow to the hat?s brim. Pull the hat down on to the head, so the crown is touching the top of your head. Most hats look best when slightly tilted to one side. Also, a hat looks best when all hair is pulled off the face, and behind the ears. Just the hat and the face should be the focal point. Bangs complicate and clutter the look.

For those going to the track, and then to dinner or a party, “hat hair” can be a problem. Here are a few tips to avoid the hair sacrifice for hat success. One: for longer hair, wear the hair pulled back in an interestingly stylish design at the nape of the neck. Add fresh flowers to your look for the evening. Two: for shorter hair, do not put any products in your hair in the morning. Carry a small can or bottle of hair spray in your handbag, and after the Stakes, pull the hair up and spray to lift it.

While there are a combination of elements to creating the perfect Preakness outfit, the key is to find the ideal balance. If your hat is bold and strong, consider keeping all other aspects toned down. Be careful not to overdo it with the handbag, shoes and other accessories. Keep those pieces simple, so as to not over complicate the look.
