President Obama issued an executive order imposing new sanctions against North Korea Wednesday in response to Pyongyang’s illicit missile tests.
“These actions are consistent with our longstanding commitment to apply sustained pressure on the North Korean regime,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement.
“The U.S. and the global community will not tolerate North Korea’s illicit nuclear and ballistic missile activities, and we will continue to impose costs on North Korea until it comes into compliance with its international obligations,” he said.
The sanctions include a prohibition on the transfer or export of North Korea’s assets, and a ban on investment, financing or the export of certain technological exports by U.S. companies.
Obama has faced pressure to issue the sanctions after North Korea’s Jan. 6 nuclear test and Feb. 7 launch that used ballistic missile technology.
