MSNBC political contributor Dr. Jason Johnson claimed that Fox News prime-time host Tucker Carlson “basically supports terrorism,” during a Thursday night appearance on All In with Chris Hayes.
Carlson sparked controversy earlier this week when he called white supremacy “a conspiracy theory” and argued that the issue is “a hoax.” The comments came days after a mass shooting left over 20 dead in El Paso, Texas, where the shooter left an anti-immigrant manifesto that warned of an invasion.
“I see Tucker Carlson as a guy who has repeatedly failed in television. Who has been basically given media welfare, a prime-time spot to replace a guy who left because of massive sexual harassment issues, and he is still being promoted not because he is good at his job, not because he has the skill set of the person he replaced, but because he promotes a certain kind of bigotry that other people can’t say as eloquently,” Johnson stated.
“There are still people who want to watch that kind of nonsense,” he continued. “For the rest of news the media ecosystem, for everybody else who is talking about it, we have to now frame this is as — this is someone who basically supports terrorism. This is someone who is disingenuous. If you’re talking about this white nationalist rhetoric, you can’t be a white nationalist, you can’t support white nationalist rhetoric without supporting terrorism. It can’t be accomplished without it. I think he should be framed in that way.”
Hayes was also critical of Carlson’s remarks the day before.
The MSNBC prime-time host said, “It’s not just the president who spews hate and racist fear mongering without dealing with the consequences. It’s Trump TV as well, specifically Tucker Carlson doing the exact same thing though admittedly with a defter touch night after night after night.”
