Warren Buffett, the fourth-richest man in the world, announced he will be donating $3.6 billion of stock to five different charities, in one of his largest gifts ever. His announcement comes days after Jim Walton, the youngest son of Walmart Inc. founder Sam Walton, donated $1.2 billion of his stock.
Bloomberg reported that a regulatory filing revealed Walton donated 11.2 million of his shares to an undisclosed charitable organization. Walton family members regularly donate to the Walton Family Foundation, which contributes money to causes that include education and the environment.
In a similarly charitable effort, Buffett’s latest gift brings the total value of his shares donated to nearly $34 billion.
In addition to all of this, a Home Depot co-founder announced over the weekend that he plans to gift almost the entirety of his $4.5 billion fortune before he dies.
Americans broke the $400 billion giving threshold for the first time in history in 2017, according to a study published by the Giving USA Foundation.
