Tuesday’s episode of “The View” got heated between co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Meghan McCain over a proposal by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., of letting felons, even terrorists and sexual predators, vote from prison. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., said she would be open to discussing it.
McCain said low-level criminals who have served their time should be able to vote, but letting the Boston bomber vote from prison is a step too far.
“For Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris to go on TV and say that the Boston terrorist deserves any rights in this country after killing three people and injuring 264 in 2013, I think is disgraceful,” said McCain. “RNC, turn that into an ad. It’s not hard to say people who commit acts of terror in this country should not only be punished, but god forbid they should have any rights any of us had or someone who commits a low-level crime like smoking pot … It is not hard to put lines between terrorists and people who commit low-level crimes.”
She then asked if anyone at the table would support Sanders’ idea, with no one saying they would.
Goldberg said if anyone serves their time, then they should be given their right to vote back.
“Here’s what I’m going to say: If they let this terrorist out because he served his time, he gets his, if he’s an American citizen as … why is your mouth open like that?” she asked McCain.
“Because, Whoopi, he killed people,” McCain replied.
“Yes, lots of people do this,” said Goldberg. “Our Constitution says, if you have done your time, you have, we hope, been reformed, been changed. If they let him out, that means they feel his time is up and he gets to become an American citizen again.”
