The president of Planned Parenthood compared Donald Trump’s misogyny to the sexism faced by her mother 26 years ago, in a Rolling Stone piece published Monday.
“This presidential campaign is unprecedented,” Cecile Richards wrote. “Not only are we poised to elect the first woman president in U.S. history, but we’ve witnessed the most grotesque display of sexism ever seen in a presidential candidate.”
When Cecile’s mother, Ann Richards, ran for Texas governor in 1990, she faced a Republican opponent who infamously joked about rape. Clayton Williams, who ultimately lost to Richards, was forced to apologize after saying that women who were going to be raped anyway should just “relax and enjoy it.”
“For me, this campaign has also surfaced memories of another campaign that was all too similar,” Cecile Richards wrote.
Planned Parenthood Action Fund, which gave Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton its first-ever primary endorsement earlier this year, has been spending more money than in any other election trying to get Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and other Republican candidates defeated.
The group has highlighted demeaning things Trump has said about women to make its case that voters interested in expanding opportunities for women should back Clinton.
“On Tuesday, our country has the chance to reject the misogyny, racism and xenophobia behind Donald Trump’s campaign,” Richards wrote.
