LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — An inmate already serving a life prison term in a 2007 intoxication assault case has been sentenced to 40 years behind bars for a 1991 slaying in Lubbock.

Joseph Jeffrey pleaded guilty Wednesday to murder in the beating death of John Duncan at the victim’s residence.

Investigators located Duncan’s body in the burned remains of his home on Feb. 16, 1991. Authorities say the victim was beaten with a hard object and his feet were severed.

Records show Jeffrey in September 1991 was sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempted murder in Lubbock County. He was released in 2006.

Jeffrey two years later was sentenced to life in prison for intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury in a Lubbock County case.
