Obama to boost number of electric car charging stations

The Obama administration will make it easier for electric vehicle owners to charge their cars by establishing a national alternative fuel corridors on national highways.

In an announcement Thursday morning, the White House said the Federal Highway Administration would create 48 alternative fuel corridors that will include infrastructure for charging electric vehicles. This would help the owners of electric vehicles drive their cars for longer distances.

The corridors will be established among already existing national highways and will be marked by signage similar to the ones announcing food, gasoline and lodging, according to a White House fact sheet. The corridors will cover 25,000 miles of highway in 35 states.

“Drivers can expect either existing or planned charging stations within every 50 miles,” the White House stated.

According to the fact sheet, 28 states, utilities, vehicle makers and “change organizations” are committing to speed up electric vehicle production to get more electric cars on the road. In addition, 24 state and local governments have promised to work closer with the federal government on putting electric vehicles in their city and state fleets.

There are about 16,000 vehicle-charging stations in the United States, up from less than 500 in 2008, the White House stated.
