No, Chris Christie, Common Core has not been eliminated in NJ

During a brief exchange in Thursday’s Republican presidential primary debate, Marco Rubio attacked Chris Christie for his past support of Common Core. In his response, Christie said, “Common Core has been eliminated in New Jersey.”

Despite Christie’s insistence, Common Core still stands in New Jersey. The state remains an active member of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, a consortium of 11 states that administers tests aligned with Common Core.

In May, Christie said the state would continue using PARCC tests even though it is considering getting rid of the Common Core standards. But evaluating schools using the PARCC tests, aligned with the standards, effectively keeps Common Core in place even though the standards may be removed.

Five years ago, New Jersey was one of the first states to adopt Common Core. Chris Christie was governor at the time.
