Minutes after being served divorce papers, a candidate for Mississippi state house reportedly went to his wife’s work, shot her, and then turned the gun on himself.
Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson told NBC News that 43-year-old Carl Robinson, a candidate in the Democratic primary for a state house seat, took a gun to the medical clinic where his wife Latoya Thompson, 33, worked and shot her Tuesday morning. He then jumped the counter and killed himself, his body falling dead beside hers.
Thompson died before she could be airlifted by helicopter to the hospital.
“We found the shooter dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head,” Dickerson said. He said the shooting is believed to be a “domestic-related” one.
The two were estranged and in the process of getting a divorce. Dickerson said that Robinson was served with divorce papers about a half-hour before the shooting occurred.
