Brenda Frese won?t be taking the stairs anymore.

The University of Maryland women?s basketball coach said she will take the Comcast Center elevator from now on so she can see her team?s 2006 NCAA national championship trophy every time the elevator stops on the second floor.

“It?s really special,” Frese said at Wednesday?s team reception, where the trophy was unveiled for the team and fans. “It reminds you of the hard work these players and staff put in to make that special season.”

Maryland finished 34-4 during its title run last season, and Frese knows that every opponent will come after them.

“I expect that we?re going to get everyone?s best shot,” she said.

Expectations are especially high for Maryland this season. The Terps return their top seven players, including the entire starting five.

“It doesn?t happen often, to have your top seven coming back,” Frese said, adding that she is excited to see how her veterans will mesh with the incoming players.

Freshman Emery Wallace will join transfer students Christie Marrone (Virginia Tech) and Sa?de Wiley-Gatewood (Tennessee) as the Terps? newest members.

“Our new people already feel like family,” said senior guard Shay Doron. “The chemistry is already there.”

Doron said that though Maryland should be the early favorite in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the team still needs to improve before its Nov. 10 opener at Middle Tennessee State. Still, the squad is quite confident.

“It?s going to be very hard to beat us,” Doron said. “You?re going to need a really good night.”
