‘I Was Appalled’

Lots of interesting reflections today from email correspondents on the election, America in 2016 and life in general. Here’s one, from a teacher:

My father fought under Patton in some of the worst fighting in the European Theater. He had frostbite that pained him for the rest of his life. I once took an hour or two out to vote in a nothing D.C. general election where my vote didn’t count, exactly to honor his sacrifice, and called him to tell him. I miss him terribly, but I am glad he didn’t live to see this day. I have never not been thrilled by the act of voting. This morning, I wrote in McMullin, voted no on DC statehood, and filed my ballot. I was filled with one emotion, and one emotion only: I was appalled.
