Sen. Ted Cruz is attacking Donald Trump on the businessman’s past support for Planned Parenthood in a new ad.
The ad features a television clip in which Trump said “Planned Parenthood serves a good function,” a statement that the Cruz campaign believes could be a liability for Trump among the heavily evangelical GOP electorate in South Carolina.
The ad also features a clip from undercover videos released last summer by David Daleiden, which shed light on how some Planned Parenthood clinics provided aborted fetal tissue to biomedical companies and kicked off a massive battle in Congress wherein Republicans tried to strip federal funds from the group.
All of the GOP presidential candidates — including Trump — said they backed the effort. But Cruz has lately been trying to stir up voters against Trump by noting that he has expressed support for abortion rights in the past. After Cruz claimed at Saturday night’s debate that Trump supports taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood “right now,” Trump called Cruz a “liar.”
“Donald Trump is just plain wrong,” concludes Cruz’s campaign ad, released Sunday.
Current polls show Trump holding a wide lead over Cruz by 22 points in South Carolina ahead of the primary election on Saturday.
