Coming clean: Over 35 million Pine-Sol products recalled for bacteria causing infection

Clorox recalled close to 40 million Pine-Sol products for carrying bacteria that can cause illness in those with compromised immune systems.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission released the recall on Tuesday, stating that testing identified bacteria in products that were made between January 2021 and September 2022. During that time period, over 37 million products were made and now have been recalled.

The bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is an environmental organism found in soil and water, and it can enter the body through the nose, the eyes, or a break in the skin. Those with compromised immune systems are more susceptible to illness from the bacteria.

Some of the recalled products include Pine-Sol Scented Multi-Surface Cleaners in Sparkling Wave, Lavender Clean, and Lemon Fresh scents. The original Pine-Sol pine scent is not included in the recall, per the CPSC.

The commission is providing refunds as a remedy for the recall. Consumers should take a picture of the UPC code and dispose of the product in the trash. Afterward, an affected customer must call Pine-Sol for a full refund of the purchase price with a receipt or manufacturer’s price without a receipt.
