Trump jokes that Canada agreed to cut all tariffs

President Trump jokingly claimed Friday that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had agreed to eliminate all trade barriers to U.S. goods.

“Justin has agreed to cut all tariffs and all trade barriers between Canada and the United States. So I’m very happy about that,” Trump said to laughs during a joint press conference at the G-7 summit in Canada.

Earlier in the day, Trump tweeted, “Canada charges the U.S. a 270% tariff on Dairy Products! They didn’t tell you that, did they? Not fair to our farmers!”

Trump imposed steel and aluminum tariffs against Canada, Mexico, and the European Union last week, but expressed a willingness to continue negotiating.

Trump did not take questions during the press conference in Canada, but reiterated his recent suggestion that the North American Free Trade Agreement may be replaced with bilateral deals with Canada and Mexico.

Sitting alongside Trudeau, Trump said, “our relationship is very good and we are actually working on cutting tariffs and making it all very fair for both countries and we have made a lot of progress today. We will see how it all works out but we have made lots of progress.”

He continued: “the relationship is probably as good or better than it’s ever been, and I think we will get to something very beneficial to Canada and to the United States.”
