Feds begin investigating Virgin Galactic crash

Federal investigators are in California to sift through the remains of Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo.

The craft exploded and broke apart Friday during a test flight, leaving one pilot dead and the other seriously injured.

The National Transportation Safety Board sent more than a dozen investigators to the area to find out what caused the crash, according to USA Today.

Richard Branson, the British billionaire founder of Virgin Galactic, was in California to be with the team.

“In testing the boundaries of human capabilities and technologies, we are standing on the shoulders of giants,” he said. “Yesterday, we fell short.”

Branson demurred when asked about the future of the program.

“It’s fair to say all 400 engineers who work here and most people in the world would love to see the dream living on,” he said at a press conference. “We owe it to our pilots.”
