Federal employees headed to the White House on Thursday, but not to work.
Instead, members of the National Federation of Federal Employees and 32 other unions, as well as other federal workers, rallied at the headquarters of the AFL-CIO and marched to the White House in protest of the partial government shutdown.
Approximately 800,000 federal employees have either been furloughed or are working without pay because of the shutdown. A stalemate between President Trump and congressional Democrats over more than $5 billion in funding for a border wall has stalled appropriations legislation that would re-open the affected departments and agencies, which have been closed since Dec. 22.
Trump, who is toying with declaring a national emergency to use already appropriated funds, possibly from the Army Corps of Engineers, was not in the White House at the time. He headed to the southern border Thursday, visiting McAllen, Texas.
Federal employees affected by the shutdown are set to miss their first paycheck this week.
