OMG!
If you’re a college student, you’ve no doubt heard of JuicyCampus.com, a Web site for college students that allows them to share juicy gossip on just about everything (sample topics: “Smelliest People on Campus” and “Worst Hookup”). And they’ve caught lots of flak for it. One Colgate University student was charged this year with aggravated harassment after threatening a shooting on JuicyCampus.
But, if you’re not a college student, that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook: JuicyCampus founder Matt Ivester spoke to 200 Georgetown students Monday night — his first time speaking directly to students on a college campus — and said that the site is considering expanding its operations to include workplaces.
Yes, that means you, congressional staffers.
But Ivester doesn’t think that political gossip is all that bad a thing (heck, it keeps us employed…). “People are going to be more forgiving when they find out that everybody does stupid stuff,” he told Yeas & Nays. “Everyone knows that … Barack Obama tried drugs, and people just don’t care anymore.”
“I think that increased transparency can be really positive in politics and the Internet certainly facilitates it,” said Ivester. “And besides: I would say if you’re doing things that you don’t want people to find out about, you should probably stop doing it.”
