Southeast D.C.’s fancy new Francis A. Gregory Library is set to break ground on Wednesday and when complete, will be a huge upgrade from its dilapidated predecessor.
Plans for the bigger, badder library include space for 80,000 books, DVDs and other library materials; separate reading areas for adults, teens and children, 32 public computers with free Wi-Fi access; a program room fitting up to 100 people and two conference rooms.

The library is expected to open next fall. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Chief Librarian Ginnie Cooper are scheduled to kick off the groundbreaking at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the library’s site on Alabama Avenue.
Francis A. Gregory was a D.C. educator in the mid-1900s. His son, Frederick D. Gregory, was the first black to pilot a space shuttle when he led the Challenger on a seven-day mission in 1985.
