Washington isn’t just steakhouses and museums anymore

Andrew Knowlton, restaurant editor of Bon Appetit magazine, named the nation’s capital America’s best food city for 2016.

In a special Thanksgiving episode of “Examining Politics,” Knowlton discussed with the Washington Examiner podcast why Washington earned that distinction in this year’s Bon Appetit restaurant issue.

“You guys have had amazing chefs in the past … you have your Jose Andres and all those guys,” Knowlton said. “But this year … I went to one place and I’d be sitting next to someone who was from D.C. and they would tell me about another place, and then somebody would text me, or I’d see something on Instagram or Twitter. I was really taken aback.”

“D.C. has always a fun city to go to museums and take in history,” Knowlton continued. “But for somebody who eats around the country, it hasn’t been necessarily the most exciting restaurant [city] in terms of neighborhood places and places that buck the trend of these big steak houses that appeal to people who are going to lunch. That was really what was exciting … There was an energy in the air and I think that’s going to continue.”

Knowlton talked about some of his favorite places to eat in Washington, the chefs he is keeping an eye on, and what’s on his list to try the next time he’s in town.

Next week, “Examining Politics” will return to its regular focus on national politics.
