Homicides in Los Angeles rise by 250% compared to last week

The Los Angeles Police Department said on Tuesday that homicides in the city increased by 250% from just last week, with the number of people who were shot increasing by 56% in the same period.

The numbers were recorded during the week of May 31-June 6, while violent protests were at their height following the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd.

In the past 24 hours, the city has seen four shootings, one of which resulted in a homicide, according to police.

Violence amid national unrest has been a major concern as the country grapples with the death of Floyd, who died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes despite pleas he couldn’t breathe. Protests, which have now gone on for about two weeks, are demanding an end to systemic racism and police brutality.
