The most elite school in Washington, where President Obama’s younger daughter Sasha is a pupil, featured swastikas at a school assembly.
Sidwell Friends is a Washington establishment redoubt that has educated children of presidents and the capital’s professional class for generations.
Administrators at the Quaker-founded school, located in a leafy residential neighborhood among seven-figure homes, wrote to parents that the incident happened during a presentation by a student-created soccer organization that aims to bring together refugee children in the Washington area.
During a question-and-answer session, students responded to the presentation by cellphone — until administrators saw two usernames that included swastikas and quickly shut down the program. Several other student usernames that were racist towards of Asians and Native Americans.
School administrators are investigating the incident on a campus long known for its ties to progressive figures. Then-first daughter Chelsea Clinton attended Sidwell Friends after her father, Bill Clinton, won the presidency. Former President Barack Obama’s oldest daughter Malia is a graduate, and his younger daughter Sasha is a senior there. Former Vice President Joe Biden’s granddaughter is also a graduate.
The school assembly swastikas come amid a string of anti-Semitic incidents at prestigious Washington-area campuses.
One former Sidwell parent, Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a professor at the George Washington School of Medicine who co-wrote a 2013 book with Dick Cheney about the former vice president’s 35-year battle with heart disease, linked the Sidwell incident to a recent brouhaha in Congress over anti-Israel remarks by Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.
“My children went to school here. It’s a bastion of liberal Washington. I fully expect some watered down, omnibus, All Hurt Matters kind of reaction from the school. What we need is a straight up condemnation of anti-Jewish hate. Period.”
