Davis issues an apology

If Fred Davis didn’t realize how big a deal the Redskins were, he does now. Not only did his missing the final day of minicamp become a big story, there were six television cameras, two radio reporters and a half-dozen reporters at Redskins Park yesterday for his apology three weeks later.

“This is not the attention you want,” said the rookie second-round tight end from USC.

Davis missed the last day because, he and the team said, he overslept. Davis said he moved into another room at the local hotel where the rookies stayed, where he would be alone.

However, it was also reported that he had been out at a nightclub the previous night.

“I didn’t even go out,” he said. “I was in the hotel the whole night.”

One knock on Davis coming out of college was his tendency to miss meetings or show up late. An NFC East executive called him an “immature kid.”

Davis metwith Zorn on May 4, the day he missed practice. Davis said he expects some ribbing from teammates, adding that he heard they would give him a Flavor Flav clock.

“It was a mistake on my part,” he said. “It’s not my character. I’m a hard-working person. It’ll never happen again.”

The Redskins start their second round of organized team activities the first week of June. Yesterday, they officially named Morocco Brown as their director of pro personnel. He was an assistant scout in Washington in 2000 and ’01 and had spent the past seven seasons with the Bears as an assistant director of pro personnel.
