Top Five: Fresh faces for Maryland

True freshmen often have to wait their turn in college football but not at Maryland. In Saturday’s scrimmage, five emerged on offense, showing promise that might have to be fulfilled sooner than later.

5. Levern Jacobs, WR »

He took a swing pass and ran away from defenders, an impressive show of speed on a 69-yard touchdown. It’s too bad the Suitland grad couldn’t convince his even-faster brother, Ohio State-bound Taivon, to join him in College Park.

4. Caleb Rowe, QB » The Landrum, S.C., product needs work on his decision-making but showed plenty of arm strength, zipping several clothesline throws. He completed the touchdown pass to Jacobs.

3. Albert Reid, RB » The Friendship Collegiate graduate showed some burst and appears the most ready of a talented stable of true freshman backs that includes Wes Brown (Good Counsel), Joe Riddle (Linganore) and Kenneth Goins (Gilman).

2. Perry Hills, QB »

Unofficially he completed 14 of 19 passes for 155 yards and ran 10 times for 63 yards. It wasn’t always pretty as the Pittsburgh product threw some flutter balls and lost a fumble, but he showed presence and a knack for making plays.

1. Stefon Diggs, WR » After Saturday’s performance — two return touchdowns and a scoring reception — it’s not as much of a stretch to imagine Diggs doing for the Terps what Sammy Watkins did for Clemson in 2011. Now if only he had a Tajh Boyd throwing to him.
