Trump demands changes to ‘obsolete’ immigration laws as migrant caravan arrives at US border

President Trump blasted U.S. immigration laws on Monday as “obsolete” and “pathetic,” after nearly a hundred Central American migrants arrived at the southwest border seeking asylum.

Declining to indicate what percentage of the individuals deserve asylum, Trump told reporters in the White House Rose Garden that “pathetic” immigration laws are to blame for the current migrant crisis.

“It started off with about 1,000 people now, I guess, it’s down to 100,” Trump said of the “caravan” of migrants. “Now, we are working on the border with the worst laws — anywhere you go, the worst in the world.”

Trump called on Congress to boost funding for his border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, in addition to ending loopholes that incentivize illegal immigration.

“There’s no country in the world that has laws like we do. They’ve got to change now for the safety of our country,” he said.

Trump’s comments came one month after he ordered the deployment of National Guard troops to the border, a move he described Monday as “a great help.”
