The Syrian government launched a counterattack Saturday to retake ground they had lost to insurgents a day earlier in the city of Aleppo.
The operation by troops loyal to Syrian leader Bashar Assad moved into Aleppo under the cover of Russian and Syrian airstrikes, according to activists and state media.

The offensive came one day after rebel forces began a broad-based ground attack in an attempt to stop Assad’s forces from taking the eastern part of the city that the rebels had held. The government forces had been laying siege on the eastern neighborhoods for a week.
The rebels were able to capture the western neighborhood of Assad, which is where much of the fighting Saturday had been concentrated, according to the Associated Press.
