Online auction to liquidate surplus school items

DETROIT (AP) — Tennis rackets, pianos, microscopes and a battery-powered scooter are among surplus items for sale at Detroit’s closed Southwestern High School.

The district on Thursday will hold its first online auction from a closed building. Money raised from the sale will help pay down a $75 million budget deficit.

Inventory management director Eric Dunatchik says the online auction also saves in moving costs. In the past, surplus from closed schools were trucked to a warehouse and sold.

Dunatchik was not sure Wednesday how much will be raised through the auction.

Since 2009, more than $11 million has been raised from the sale of vacant school properties and annual leases.

The district showcased 22 school buildings and sites in May during a daylong real estate purchasing conference for investors, developers and builders.
