Landry out for opener

Safety takes the blame for hamstring setback

ASHBURN — Strong safety LaRon Landry said he won’t play in Sunday’s opener vs. the New York Giants after suffering a setback with his hamstring. He also blamed himself rather than the training staff as he did on Twitter on Tuesday.

“As of now, yeah, it looks like I’m going to miss it,” Landry said of the opener.

Player of note
S Reed Doughty
With LaRon Landry unlikely to play Sunday, Doughty will get the start at strong safety, just as he did for nine games in 2010. He has started 25 games in his career with Washington. Doughty is a capable backup who can be counted on to be in the right spot. He’s a solid blitzer, but he lacks the instincts and speed to be a playmaker. Doughty can play near the line of scrimmage.

Landry said he wasn’t sure how much time he would miss, but this is the second time he has hurt his hamstring.

He said he aggravated his hamstring running either Saturday or Monday. Landry said when he went in for treatment Tuesday, an MRI showed “a setback.”

“It’s not how much running I was doing. It’s how much I tried to push it,” he said. “I really tried to gauge it and see what I can do and wind up hurting myself more. … Hamstrings can be tricky. You come back too soon you can aggravate it, which I did.”

Though Landry seemed to blame the training staff for his setback, coach Mike Shanahan placed it on the player.

“When you’re competitive, you want to come back quick,” Shanahan said. “Those guys know their bodies better than anybody. The trainers do a great job trying to work with him, but the guy has to know his body.”

On Tuesday, Landry’s frustration showed through on Twitter. He tweeted, “Uuhhh oo it ain’t my fault…blame the genius circus staff for the rush. wouldve been there 2wks ago. Im [sorry] but saga [continues].” The tweet was later deleted.

Three days earlier, he tweeted, “Dont u hate when u absolutely know something 200% and [people] still do the opposite of what u tell them!!! Set backs … !!!” That tweet remains on his Twitter feed; it also included profanities.

“Just a little frustrated with the injury,” Landry said. “It was all my fault. It was unprofessional. I take full blame for it.”
