D.C. GOP: Thomas is worse than Weiner

The District’s Republican Party on Thursday used Rep. Anthony Weiner’s decision to resign from Congress as further fuel in calling for Ward 5 D.C. Councilman Harry Thomas Jr.’s resignation.

“How is it that Congressman Weiner was forced to resign by his Democratic colleagues over inappropriate pictures, yet Harry Thomas still refuses to resign while the [D.C. Attorney General] takes him to court for $1 million in damages,” Bob Kabel, chairman of the D.C. Republican Committee, said in a statement. “Not to downplay what Weiner did, but what’s more offensive, pictures over the Internet or [allegedly] stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars that were supposed to help District children?”

D.C. Attorney General Irvin Nathan has accused Thomas of siphoning off more than $300,000 meant for a youth baseball program and then spending the cash on an Audi sport-utility vehicle, and golfing trips to Las Vegas and Pebble Beach. Thomas has denied any wrongdoing.

Weiner, of course, is the Democrat from New York who was caught sending naked pictures of himself via Twitter to women around the country. The ensuing debacle culminated Thursday afternoon with Weiner’s resignation.
