Maryland’s top transportation official announced Monday that she will be stepping down at the start of July.
Beverley Swaim-Staley, who is retiring after 25 years of state service, has been Maryland transportation secretary since September 2009. She is the first woman to hold the top job.
In her more than two-year tenure, the state opened the long-planned InterCounty Connector that runs across Montgomery County into Prince George’s County. Her office also was involved in a regional effort to reform Metro, with a full replacement of all four Maryland representatives on the transit agency’s 16-seat board of directors.
It is not clear who will be taking her position. Her predecessor, John Porcari, left the post to become deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
