Applicants being accepted for moderate-income housing

Howard County is holding an open enrollment period through May 23 for the Moderate Income Housing Unit program.

Individuals wishing to buy or rent a moderate-income unit must fill out an application to determine eligibility based on income, assets, household size and whether the person wants to rent or buy.

Eligible applicants will be placed on a waiting list and selected through a lottery. The first lottery will be held June 23 for town houses at Shipley?s Grant and condominiums at Elkridge Crossing.

The MIHU program requires developers of new housing in certain zoning districts to sell or rent some units, usually between 10 percent and 15 percent, to moderate-income residents.

The current maximum income for a family of four to buy a house is $72,947 and to rent is $54,710.
