Police compare footage of two bank robberies

Fairfax County police Wednesday were trying to determine if the lunch-hour robbery of a Provident Bank branch located inside a Shoppers Food Warehouse on 6228 N. Kings Highway was performed by the same man who tried to rip off the bank late last month.

On Aug. 29, Provident Bank received a call around 11 a.m. with an unknown man threatening to explode a bomb inside the grocery store if cash wasn’t brought to a vehicle in the parking lot, Fairfax County police said.

Police who responded found a suspicious package near an automatic teller machine located inside the grocery store and near the bank. The store was quickly evacuated, but the package turned out to be a hoax device.

However, police said they were able to identify a possible suspect by reviewing the footage from the ATM’s surveillance camera. And the same man may have pulled a Maryland robbery last month.

Montgomery County detectives believe the man is the same person who showed up on footage taken during an Aug. 15 robbery of a Bank of America at 2601 University Blvd. W. in Silver Spring, said police spokeswoman Melanie Brenner.

Around 4:20 p.m. a man, who was wearing the same hat and met the physical description of the Fairfax suspect, entered the Bank of America and passed a note to the teller demanding money, Brenner said. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, he fled.

The suspect in Wednesday’s robbery was initially described as dark-skinned and wearing dark clothing.
