Dupont Circle restaurant has violent history

The Dupont Circle restaurant where a man was fatally shot and five others were wounded this weekend has been the scene of several violent incidents and was under the city review for a big brawl earlier this year, records show.

The Heritage India bar and restaurant at 1337 Connecticut Ave., remained closed Monday on orders of Police Chief Cathy Lanier, and investigators continued to search for suspects in the fight. In all, three people were shot and three others were stabbed, one of whom was found inside the lounge, police said.

In the past year, there have been five incidents of violence at or in front of the restaurant, including two sex abuse cases, a robbery with a gun and an assault with a dangerous weapon, according to D.C. police records.

“Any time we have a shooting like [Sunday’s], we’re going to close the place,” said D.C. Councilman Jack Evans. He said he was not aware of previous problems at the lounge. “The overriding issue is you have restaurants that morph into a nightclub with promoters and bands and disc jockeys. What precautions are they taking for security?”
