An American service member died Saturday in Iraq in a “non-combat incident,” U.S. military officials said Saturday.
Military officials have not yet released any information on the service member, nor any information on the circumstances surrounding the death. In the statement, officials said they will release more information on the incident as appropriate, following protocol of not releasing potentially sensitive information before notifying the next of kin.
The incident happened in Nineveh province, a few miles outside of Mosul. The area was one of the major combat theaters between U.S.-allied forces and the Islamic State.
American and other U.S.-led coalition troops remain actively engaged in northern Iraq and near the border with Syria. After the fall of the Islamic State, troops are working with local militia forces and the Iraqi military to train and equip security forces against any potential emerging threats, including any remnants of radicalized fighters left by ISIS.
