Ellicott City offering free parking until end of the year

Holiday shoppers rejoice: Parking in downtown Ellicott City will be free from Friday until year’s end.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman said this minor though significant incentive will help shoppers, employees and small-business owners who may be struggling during the national economic downturn.

The downtown area has four metered parking areas with more than 140 spaces. Signs at each location will notify customers of the free parking.

Before this week’s announcement, the Ellicott City Restoration Foundation, an organization that advocates for the improvement of historic Ellicott City, asked county officials to offer free parking during weekends.

Parking on Main Street is not metered and will continue to be limited to two hours, officials said.
