John Avlon, CNN commentator and editor-in-chief of the Daily Beast, called Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen a “dystopian Disney character” for her immigration crackdown plans.
“I think a conversation about compassion that’s predicated on defending separating children from from their parents and putting children on military bases is fundamentally flawed,” Avlon said. “Are you trying to be a dystopian Disney character?”
Nielsen defended prosecuting immigrants who enter the country illegally, even if it means separating them from their children.
The DHS secretary said a similar process happens in criminal courts in the U.S. “every day.”
The Health and Human Services Department is also considering using military bases to house children of illegal immigrants as the country is determining their status, the Associated Press reported.
Avlon slammed the Trump administration’s plan, calling it bad moment in American history.
“For a party that allegedly believes that government doesn’t do a lot right, having soldiers babysit children separate from their parents, probably not the best moment in our history.”
