Maryland woman defends killing man she filed protective orders against

A Maryland woman shot and killed her domestic abuser at her home Sunday after he defied two protective orders filed against him.

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the shooting and has yet to file any charges, noting the woman has fully cooperated with the investigation.

Court records showed the most recent protective order was still in effect for Danny Ray Sidders Jr., 52, that required him to leave the home, stay away, and surrender all weapons, according to WUSA.

The protective orders also reportedly noted that in 2020, Sidders had overpowered the woman in her home with violence that included grabbing and hitting her. In 2021, the woman barricaded herself in her room as Sidders threatened to take the door off its hinges.

Tiffany Santana with the Bethany House of Northern Virginia, a shelter for abuse victims, affirmed the steps taken by the woman to get the protective orders, despite their shortcomings.

“If you have filed a complaint and you have written protective order, it makes it a lot easier to prosecute when you’ve gone through all those steps,” Santana said.

Santana called for greater enforcement of protective orders, saying some victims feel the need to seek weapons.

“It’s not always the ideal, but what we do know about domestic violence is that it almost always escalates,” Santana said. “If a particular victim feels like they’ve done everything that they can through the system and they need to make sure that they have an additional layer of protection, sometimes that’s an option for people.”
