Barber planning to exit on top

He’s at the peak of his career. He’s also at the end.

There’s a chance the New York Giants won’t make the playoffs, which means running back Tiki Barber’s 10-year career could end Saturday against Washington, his childhood team.

“It’s ironic and cool that my last game is in my home neck of the woods against my favorite coach growing up,” Barber said.

Barber, the University of Virginia product, has rushed for 10,215 yards in his career. This season, he’s rushed for 1,428 yards and caught 32 passes for 360 more. His coach, Tom Coughlin, said he’s playing the best of his career.

“He breaks tackles, he does things well in the open field, he utilizes his blockers well,” Coughlin said. “He has a lot of patience … He’s playing very, very well.”

But Barber isn’t second-guessing his decision. And he said he’ll likely announce his next move within a week.

“On Sundays I’m as competitive and passionate as it comes,” he said. “But during the week I sit in meetings and instead of being solely focused on the Redskins, I’m thinking about other things.

“This game chews up players and spits them out. In some ways, it’s part of an ego play on my part to walk away when I want.”
