Oklahoma Democratic House candidate for the 5th Congressional District Abby Broyles is defending her character in a series of tweets after she apologized for vomiting in a clothes hamper and berating young girls while drunk at a Valentine’s weekend slumber party.
“I’m not perfect,” Broyles said Tuesday as part of a longer Twitter thread.
Broyles, an attorney and former local television news anchor, previously told a local news outlet in an interview on Friday that she had an adverse reaction after drinking wine in combination with medication she had “never taken before.” She was invited to the sleepover by a friend from law school who is the mother of one of several 12- and 13-year-old girls who were at the party on Feb. 11.
“Like all of us, I’m not perfect,” Broyles tweeted on Tuesday. “We all make mistakes and I’m sure I’m not the only Oklahoman who’s ever had one too many on a Friday night.”
DRUNK DEMOCRATIC HOUSE HOPEFUL VERBALLY BERATED GIRLS AT PARTY, PARENT SAYS
The things I’m accused of saying are not who I am, nor do they depict the entirety of the situation that occurred. They are not a reflection of my beliefs. This has been a painful attack on my character from the accusations themselves to the overwhelming amount of

Broyles’s behavior at the sleepover was brought to light after a parent of one of the girls, Sarah Matthews, tweeted and contacted local news outlets to speak about the candidate’s behavior. Matthews said Broyles scared and traumatized several girls when she cursed at them after a night of drinking, adding, “You ruined a pair of their shoes with your vomit!”
“For someone who pontificates to be undyingly pro woman, I am disgusted by your behavior and find it appalling you couldn’t understand why their parents are angry,” Matthews wrote.
The 32-year-old Democratic candidate initially denied being at the party to NonDoc, a local nonprofit news outlet that first broke the story of Broyles’s attendance at the sleepover.
“I want to say sorry from the bottom of my heart, I apologize for any hurt or damage or trauma that my behavior, when I didn’t know what I was doing, caused. I’m deeply sorry,” Broyles said in an interview with NBC affiliate KFOR after admitting she didn’t “remember anything until I woke up or came to, and I was throwing up in a hamper.”

In her tweets, Broyles said she had received “politically-charged threats, malicious emails, calls and messages” following the sleepover incident, adding that she is “taking some time to focus on my mental health and recharging so I can feel 100% again.”
Broyles is the likely Democratic nominee in reconfigured Oklahoma’s 5th Congressional District, covering part of Oklahoma City, the state’s capital and largest population center. She is running against first-term GOP Rep. Stephanie Bice following the state’s redistricting process, which carved out heavily Democratic parts of Oklahoma City.
