Ulman looks ahead to managing growth, improving land-use as county executive

As the newly elected Howard County executive, Ken Ulman said he plans to tackle the heated issue of managing growth in the county and find ways to improve the county?s land-use process.

“Growth is always going to be an issue for Howard County because of our location [and] our quality of life,” said Council Member Ulman, D-District 4. “I am convinced we can always do better and always create a better process.”

Ulman, who will work with a nearly all-new County Council, also pledged to continue managing the school system and public safety, issues he highlighted in his campaign. He planned to announce his transition team today, then take a quick vacation before being sworn in Dec. 4.

Ulman credited his challengers, Republican Council Member Chris Merdon, District 1, and independent Stephen Wallis, for running a strong race.

“We had three good candidates who communicated their message, and voters made their decision,” he said.

Wallis said he plans to retire from his job as principal of Harper?s Choice Middle School in July.

He said he will spend time consulting for schools and spending time with his family, including a 4-month-old grandson. Merdon could not be reached for comment.
