A newborn baby was found abandoned in the trash bin in the bathroom of an Air Mauritius flight Saturday during a routine customs check.
The baby boy was allegedly born during the flight and abandoned in the trash bin on New Year’s Day. He was not found until the plane landed at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, the main airport on the African Island of Mauritius. The flight came from Madagascar.
The baby was taken to a local hospital and is reportedly healthy. The suspected mother of the baby, a woman from Madagascar, was detained at the airport before being transported to the hospital, where it was confirmed she had given birth earlier that day. The mother initially tried to deny the baby was hers.

The 20-year-old mother of the baby is facing charges of abandoning a newborn and will be questioned by the police following her release from the hospital, according to the BBC. She was placed under police surveillance at the hospital.
The Malagasy mother, whose name has not been released, arrived in Mauritius on a two-year work permit.

Another baby was found in a toilet at an airport in the capital city of Doha, Qatar, in October of 2020. The female passengers aboard a Qatar Airways flight to Australia were forced to undergo a vaginal exam to determine the mother of the baby, according to the New York Post.
