The major shift didn’t occur and for that college football purists can be thankful. Now they can go back to complaining about the BCS.
It would have been interesting, however, to see how the next 25 years unfolded had there been a seismic shift. Maybe no school would have felt that change more than USC.

First, they would have added games against Oklahoma and Texas, two teams they have a history with already. The Trojans lost to Texas in a national championship game while beating the Sooners in another. But imagine the hype of USC facing these schools once a year (though they likely would not have played them every season).
But it would have come with a cost. Had the Pac-10 become the Pac-16, that would have prompted other changes on the college landscape. Notre Dame might have been forced to go to the Big Ten (and still might). Thanks to the increased competition both would face, one of the more storied rivalries might have died.
