Donald Trump predicts “probably a 40 percent chance” that his vice presidential pick will be a formal rival for the nomination.
“I’ve gotten to be friends with a lot of those people and I guess perhaps enemies with a couple,” Trump said in a phone interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” of the 16 people who also ran for the GOP nomination. “But, I’ve gotten to be friends with quite a few. I would said there’s a good 40 percent chance.”
Trump agreed that he has become “frenemies” with even a few.
Names that have been floated include Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Trump has said in prior interviews that he has already begun the vetting process for his vice presidential pick.
One name that has also been tossed around is Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who was the last man standing against Trump until his drop out Wednesday afternoon. Trump at first said Kasich is “rising rapidly” in his mind as the running mate pick, but Kasich has since shot that down.
Trump did so too on Thursday morning.
“I’ve had a good relationship with him and I really got along with him well,” Trump told CNBC. “I would say probably it’s unlikely that it will be John, I’m not even sure John wants it.”
