Waffle House shooter sentenced to life in prison

A man who opened fire in a Tennessee Waffle House and killed four people in 2018 was sentenced to life in prison on Saturday.

Travis Reinking, 33, will spend the remainder of his life in prison without the possibility of parole after he was found guilty on 16 counts on Friday.

“I don’t want any other mother to go through what I’m going through; it’s a journey. It’s been four years, like I said, and it’s the hardest four years of my life. It’s bittersweet. I’m glad it’s over at least, for the most part,” Shaundelle Brooks, the mother of one of the victims, told WKRN after the sentencing.

A Tennessee jury found Reinking, 33, guilty on Friday of four counts each of first-degree premeditated murder, attempted first-degree premeditated murder, unlawful employment of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and first-degree felony murder. Reinking previously admitted he was the shooter but pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

The Secret Service previously detained Reinking in July 2017 for entering a restricted area outside the White House, where he demanded a meeting with then-President Donald Trump.

Reinking’s trial was stalled in 2018 after he was diagnosed with severe schizophrenia and treated at a mental institute.

The victims’ families intend to go after Reinking’s father, Jeffrey, next in court. Jeffrey Reinking is facing criminal charges in Illinois due to his decision to give Travis his gun.
